The first hotel opened in Val d’Is\u00e8re in 1888. This high mountain pastoral village, perched at 1850m at the top of the Tarentaise valley, was to become a pioneer in the history of downhill skiing from the early 1930s: \u2018the Mecca of skiing\u2019 wrote Paule Hutzler in Paris Soir in 1938. Throughout the 20th century, the resort became the venue for some of the biggest events and innovations in skiing, and the undisputed capital of ski racing in France, including the unforgettable setting for the 1992 Olympic Games.
